Consider adding '4x' pixel ratio logos and media queries
Open, MediumPublic

Description

In regards to T245190 (and related to T246054) we should evaluate and consider adding and delivering 4x pixel ratio logos.

Currently we're maximally delivering 2x logos, several new devices support 3x and 4x CSS pixel ratios, for example

  • Samsung Galaxys S6+ (all 4x)
  • iPhone 11Pro and Pro Max (3x)
  • Google Pixel XL

See https://material.io/resources/devices/

Proposal

Test current configuration visually in comparison with

  • 3x logos and
  • 4x logos

and consider if extra data is worth the effort.

@Volker_E - would this affect mobile logos? I'm assuming yes since we're planning on splitting the logo 3 way

Just want to stick this on the performance team radar.

This recent article comes to mind and may be worth considering:

Cap image pixel density to 2x […] There is no distinguishable difference to the human eye.

Moving to our radar until/if this becomes current work.

Excellent resources @Krinkle and interesting to see this question be surfaced elsewhere at same time. I've specifically put “evaluate” into task description to ensure @alexhollender and myself gonna make hands-on comparisons on devices iPhone 11 Pro and recent Galaxy.
